BIND
5 March 2025
A Dorset Visual Arts Salon Collective Exhibition
Sat 1st March - Sun 27th April
Members of Dorset Visual Arts’ Salon Collective present new work exploring the relationships which bind as well as differentiate their various approaches to making work, with a focus and exploration on colour, drawing and interdisciplinary practice.
The Group meets regularly to undertake critical reviews of work in progress and encourage skills swaps and knowledge sharing, as well as studio visits and informal collaborations, and to consider some of the different aspects and challenges of working as an artist in a rural county.
Using artist Richard Serra’s Verblist as a ‘jumping-off’ point, as well as other prompts from group discussion, lines of enquiry emerged within the Group’s work, allowing individuals to question and challenge their own processes and practice. Verblist compiled a series of "actions to relate to oneself, material, place, and process". ‘To Bind’ is one of 84 verbs and a further 24 possible contexts in Serra’s list, written in four columns of script.
With a common ground of experience and regular dialogue between the members of the Salon Collective, individual ideas connect through these various threads. Inspiration is explored and pursued, sometimes unravelling before reforming… but always questioning its purpose, and evolving.
