Droves & Downs - Walking Workshop

Droves & Downs - Walking Workshop

Cranborne Chase | Droves & Downs

A DVAtions project in partnership with Cranborne Chase National Landscape

Callout to Dorset Visual Arts Members

In partnership with Cranborne Chase National Landscape, Dorset Visual Arts would like to offer an opportunity for a DVA Artist Member to lead a walking workshop during the first weekend of Chalke Escape Walking Festival (30 May - 8 June 2025).

Brief

WONDERFUL WOODLANDS – Friday 30th May, 11am and 2pm (2 sessions)

The invited artist will lead a two-hour session in a beautiful woodland on Cranborne Chase. With a Family-Friendly focus, the brief would be particularly suitable for an artist whose practice and ideas can be shared easily within the session, such as through drawing, a simple printmaking process or photography.

A ranger from Cranborne Chase National Landscape will lead a walk through the woods pointing out different aspects of the woodland’s ecology and heritage such as signs of coppicing, rare species and observing seasonal highlights. Participants will be guided by the artist to explore and respond to the unique biodiversity and character of the woodland, using your smartphone on the walk to capture and create images, and then work these up into a ‘hand-made’ artwork in the woods.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore and learn about this particular part of Cranborne Chase and make some artwork to take home with them!

The Droves & Downs project, produced by Dorset Visual Arts, will culminate in an exhibition at Shaftesbury Arts Centre in November 2025. Images from the Wonderful Woodlands walks will be shown as part of this.
