Tony Heathershaw
Mostly self taught, I paint watercolours in both traditional and contemporary styles. Subjects include landscapes, boats and harbour scenes. People ask me to paint local views and I enjoy the challenge of trying to see things the way they do, the light, the atmosphere, the colours, whatever it was that caught their eye.I might paint several versions of the same view before alighting on the view they like. I also paint my own favourite views and imaginary scenes employing motifs from nature. As a retired oceanographer I am particularly drawn to the sea and big skies with low horizons. I take my inspiration from the work of Edward Seago, Roland Hilder and Edward Wesson. The sheer beauty of watercolour excites me and I aim to keep my work looking fresh and spontaneous, even though it might have been painted in the studio.I work from sketches, photographs where required, memory and imagination.
