Susan R Hughes
I am a visual artist who works from life. Having trained as an illustrator 20 years ago I undertook a Research Masters Degree in art and design at Plymouth University in 2006. My work considers the physical qualities of materials employed. Paint is often applied and partially washed away to leave ambiguous layers of colour to cross over and merge. Using traditional materials I likes to experiment with the boundaries between drawing and painting, life and abstraction, and uses repetition to reveal ideas regarding identity within the work. Recent work has re-examined the female nude and the construction of feminine identity, through a series of life paintings and prints. I also runs Weymouth Life Drawing Group, and teach life drawing with Artslink at Sherborne. Exhibiting regularly in the region, I have recently exhibiting with Wessex Contemporary Arts at Dorset County Museum and been selected for the Dorchester Open. Future projects include a three-year exhibition from 2014/16, with the National Trust at Max Gate and new Thomas Hardy visitor centre.
