profile picture

I am Sophie Sharp, a painter/printmaker who has lived in West Dorset for almost three decades. I studied Fine Art (painting) at Cheltenham arts school between 1990 and 1993. Here I developed my figurative painting style and a love of portrait painting. Working mainly in oil, my subjects were people and (later) landscapes, also undertaking a number of portrait commissions over the years. Approximately 10 years ago, printmaking became a major interest. Having taught myself screen printing and reacquainted myself with the medium of lino printing, I developed a series of designs for lampshades. These took the natural world as their subject matter, taking inspiration from the Dorset landscape and its inhabitants. From there (having caught the printmaking bug), I began working on limited edition lino prints and this continues to be my main preoccupation (although I try to find time to paint the odd picture too!) My limited edition prints are mostly multi-block lino prints, meaning that several blocks are carved and printed layer after layer to create an image of overlapping and combining colours and forms. A complicated process involving a fair bit of planning and a lot of experimentation.
