Simon Thomas Pirie are makers of beautiful contemporary furniture, kitchens, interiors and public art commissions. Simon's furniture is usually made in native hardwoods. His work is a blend of contemporary form and classic elegance, combined with the highest quality craftsmanship from his small but dedicated team of makers. The workshops based near Bere Regis are open to visitors by appointment. Simon originally trianed as a sculptor but a lifelong interest in timber brought him to study at John Makepeaces’ Hooke Park College, where he gained a Master of Science degree. The idea of the experimental campus in the woods was to link forestry with manufacture and design, and so make greater use of the ultimate sustainable material – timber. This principle has remained core to Simon’s design and making philosophy ever since. After some years teaching design at Bournemouth University, he established his first workshop in 1998, in Dorset, England. Since then the business has continued to expand making increasingly large and complex projects. Simon enjoys working with architects and interior designers on larger projects and has established a strong track record of working collaborativly. Individual free standing pieces of furniture are still key though and whether it’s a small side table, a stunning kitchen or seating for a town square, all the work that leaves the Courtyard Workshops is given the same attention to detail. This is reflected in numerous high profile awards including two Design Guild Marks, winning the Wood Awards for work at St Hughes College Oxford and 'Designer - Kitchen of the Year' 2018 for the Bliss kitchen project.
