Richard Gregory
Visual Artist
My practice includes drawing, installation, photography, digital and audio-visual work, printmaking and painting. Much of what I do reflects on the precariousness and absurdities of modern life. Often it leans into questions of memory, identity and origin. The work stems from an art-and-design perspective, exploring the geography, industry, and relationships within spaces and systems. I make discoveries through walking, cycling and loitering. I observe both the obvious and what’s happening around the edges. I steal references from nature and the human-made environment. I document situations through photography, written notes and visceral memory (the feeling of a place and time is critical). Drawing plays two roles in my practice. I use it to record and develop ideas through working drawings and exploratory sketches. It’s part of a studio-focused methodology for creating end-works that tend towards an aerial-view, map-like quality. This is an expanding part of my practice. I work with simple, ready materials, found objects and indigenous matter in my installation projects. Monotony and repetition are recurring themes, bringing a sense of ritual to performative and graphic works, one-offs and series. I fixate on formal geometries and motifs, with examples appearing in landwork, sculpture and digital drawing.
