Lyn Kirkland
Contemporary Encaustic Wax & Mixed media
When I first dipped my brush in the molten wax, I knew I was hooked! It was a visceral moment, everything about the wax makes my spirits soar. My first experiments were with wax casting. I quickly realised the potential for painting, and merging 2D with 3D to create wonderful textures, excavating the layers and embedding imagery and ephemera. Whilst I have been painting with encaustic since 2014, I am still on a journey to push the boundaries of its versatility and see where it will take me. Inspired by my surroundings, the rugged Dorset coastline, the confluence of sea and sky, the organic textures of nature and decay. My work crosses boundaries of realism and abstraction, I like to use different supports, found driftwood, Portland stone, antique and reclaimed pallet wood. I teach and mentor students in encaustic wax techniques, I produced the first fine art encaustic wax ‘retreat’ in the Southwest in June of 2025. My students come from across the World, most recently I was joined by a British Council Asia student from Indonesia for a cross-cultural residency. I view my relationship with the wax as a partner on a road of discovery.
