Lorraine Bowley

Mixed Media Artist

profile picture

My practice is rooted in a lifelong dedication to both making and teaching art. After completing my foundation at Shelly Park Art College, I went on to study Ceramics at Camberwell University. Alongside a teaching career spanning over 25 years, I have continually developed my own body of work—sharing knowledge, skills, and techniques while sustaining my personal creative journey. Working primarily in mixed media and collage, my pieces often incorporate vintage ephemera, layered surfaces, and hand-stitched embellishments. I use threads, found imagery, and textured fragments to evoke a sense of time, memory, and emotional depth. My process is deeply intuitive, building multiple layers to reveal hidden histories—both personal and collective. Themes of motherhood, love, loss, and the maternal bond run throughout my work. Recurring motifs such as flocking birds, delicate figures, flowers, insects, moths, and butterflies serve as symbolic markers of transformation, fragility, and connection. Each element speaks to the layered complexity of relationships and the lingering presence of memory. Through my work, I aim to hold space for quiet reflection—where personal stories and universal experiences intersect.
