Lesley Fawcett

No profile picture

The landscapes of Dorset and Somerset and the ever-changing forms and colours of trees are the inspiration for Lesley's textile designs. The beautiful shapes and patterns lend themselves to the art of batik. Lesley's interest in dyeing and batik was inspired initially when living in Northern Nigeria, where she saw the dramatic sight of textiles with tied, stitched and waxed designs being dyed in deep pits of indigo dug into the ground. Back in England she started experimenting with dyes and resist techniques and became increasingly interested in the subtle colours and patterns of Javanese batik, eventually visiting Yogyakarta in 1996 for an intensive batik course. Her original batiks are created on silk using the traditional techniques of repeated dip dying using hot, liquid wax as a resist. She is a Craft member of the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen and a member of the Batik Guild.
