Laura Butt
Textile artist creating maps out of fabric and thread.
Using fabric layers and free motion embroidery, Laura transforms images into textile art pieces. Currently, Laura is combining her chosen medium with her love of exploration by creating textile maps. When starting a project she references OS maps, local and historical maps, as well as drawing on ‘walking research’. She then chooses layers, working with the fabric patterns and colour, combining the two to give clarity and tell the most important story of a place. Free-motion embroidery is used to add detail and texture much like sketching with a pencil; however, the needle is static, and it is the fabric that moves. Laura chooses locations from the walks she takes as well as commissions of people’s special places. Her most current work can be seen on her Instagram account @lauras_textisle as well as local galleries Ballard and Bay, The Grange and By the Castle, Corfe.
