Hand thrown Studio Pottery,

profile picture

I have been throwing pots for nearly 50 years now, I first learnt to throw on the wheel as a child, and continued pottery all through senior school. A Fine Art degree at Chelsea Collage of Art gave me the confidence to express myself through form and decoration and I found my way through to a full time pottery practice shortly after graduating. As well as being creative I think of pottery being a grounding and a meditation practice that is available to everyone, and I now offer classes from my studio. It is highly satisfying making ceramics on the wheel. I aim to throw in a fluid and spontaneous way, with soft clay. I hold in my mind the intention of what I wish to create and then with a delicate concentration, allow the form to come. Each piece is loosely decorated with free flowing coloured clay slips, which requires the same open minded concentration. Mugs have hand pulled handles. The pots are single fired to stoneware in a gas kiln. I specialize in reduction. This type of firing gives the misty optical blue chun effects to the wood ash glaze and brings out the lovely iron speckling in the clay. It also gives a rugged flame touched look, softening and deepening the colours. My pots are made to be used every day, to be tactile and comforting. I hope you enjoy them.
