Jane Huxtable Brown
Jane Huxtable Brown was trained at the Chelsea School of Art where she obtained her National Diploma in Design. She also won a number of National and College awards. She obtained her Art Teacher’s Diploma at The Bournemouth Municipal College of Art. After qualifying, she exhibited and taught in London and Marlow. She also carried out portrait commissions during this period, one of which features in the Public Catalogue Foundation. Between 1988 and 2001 her studio overlooked the Thames in Marlow where she developed her own approach to watercolours particularly concentrating on water, exploring space and movement. She applied the same approach to her work in oils. For watercolours she always works on location, her oils are painted in her studio from drawings done on location. Jane’s work may be summed up in Sir Herbert Read’s words “Art is pattern informed by sensibility” Jane started to work West Dorset in 1970. Since 1985, after acquiring a permanent base here, the countryside around West Dorset has played an increasing role in her work. From 2001 she has shared her time between West Dorset, Brentford, and the Charente, concentrating on the countryside around here, the river around Brentford and vineyards and the countryside in France. She has also worked in Venice, India and California. Jane has been exhibiting in many galleries and Exhibitions including the Beaminster and Wooburn Festivals. She also has participated in the Bucks and Dorset Art Weeks. She has shown at The Society of Women Artists and at the South West Academy in Exeter. Her paintings are in collections in Canada, the United States, Australia, and France as well as in this country. Jane has taught painting both in schools and to adults. She taught “A” level Art for many years at the Berkshire College of Art. She subsequently introduced Painting to the East Berkshire College of Agriculture. She has also ran courses at Denman College and has tutored abroad for Cox and Kings and Jules Verne. She continues to undertake freelance life classes, criticisms, lectures and “teach-ins”.
