Jacqueline Milton
From an early age, I’ve enjoyed drawing. At college I wanted to be a cartographer or an illustrator, but I was lucky enough to become a designer for Axminster Carpets, Devon. I can only describe my early days there as the equivalent of an apprenticeship. I love fabrics, colour and pattern and part of my passion is creating wall panels from merino fleece and silks which are wet felted by hand. Sometimes the pieces are finished with beads or stitching to highlight a particular area of the design, for example the anthers of a flower. Felting gives me a lot of freedom; it’s a great medium to work with and extremely tactile. It has inspired me to explore new ways of expressing my art and helps me to experiment with blocks of colour, which is sometimes transferred to other areas of creativity. My work is inspired by the natural world; flowers, leaves, fruit and insects. My garden is a great source of creativity, full of life and always changing. I describe myself as a quintessentially English interior fabric designer with a love of all things floral. As well as wall art, I paint patterns which are converted into fabrics for the home. This has been the mainstay of my design career. The future is exciting. I plan to spend more time in the studio exploring new ideas, so watch this space!
