Emma Scattergood

Creative expression in Nature

profile picture

I'm a walking artist and writer, for whom moving and working in the landscape - especially wilder, open places - is a key part of my practice. In 2023 I spent a year walking and drawing/painting the SW Coast Path, creating 50 pictures to celebrate (and raise money for) the SW Coast Path Association's 50th anniversary. This, combined with a two week residency at Cape Cornwall, culminated in my first solo exhibition, The Creative Path, at Durlston Country Park in July 2024. I enjoy drawing landscapes quickly in ink, on the hoof then, in the studio, I like to paint with acrylics/mixed media (for their quick drying times), sometimes incorporating natural elements from where I'm working, to enhance the sense of place. My work in the studio dances in, around and away from realism, responding to the land and my emotional response to it. My aim is to capturing the elements, energy, textures and sometimes history of a place in a way that also acknowledges my inner landscape. My next solo exhibition, Grounded, will be at the Fine Foundation Gallery, Durlston Country Park in March 2026.
