Emma Moxey
Abstract quasi-mapmaker
I am a painter, drawer, ‘odd-ject’-maker, installation artist, abstract explorer, obsessive yet nonsensical mapmaker, and meticulous mark-maker. My work is a playful adventure into the soft-verged concepts of the place and the pre-place, the visible and the invisible, the temporal and the timeless. Flitting between order and chaos, I use a kit of signs and symbols, thematic codes, ambiguous schematics, and painterly systems to draw out the quasi-landmarks of place. Deep rooted and imaginative, these form an intricate and interwoven topography, existing somewhere between idea and thought, being and becoming, place and space. My work is held in public collection by the Rabley Centre for Contemporary Drawing, and I have been exhibited nationally and internationally. I have been twice selected for the Jerwood Drawing Prize, was the winner of the VAO painting prize 2022, and was recently artist in residence at the John Hansard Gallery Southampton, taking over the Active Space Gallery. I hold a PGCE in Post 16 sector art education from the University of Wales, and a Masters with distinction in Fine Art Research from the University of the West of England Bristol. Art education is embedded in my practice and I have a significant history in teaching at secondary to HE level, and was the Education and Public Engagement Curator at Giant, Bournemouth’s much missed centre for Contemporary Art.
