Caroline Sharp

profile picture

Born in London. Childhood in Iran. University in London. Worked in London and Dorset as a Landscape Architect/Urban Designer until 2013. Caroline is an established artist and maker. Public commissions for site-specific installations in which the importance of form and context are paramount have been a large part of her practice. In her current small scale sculptural and assemblage pieces, she takes the natural world as a starting point using a variety of grown and gathered natural materials including her own charcoal, clay, chalk, willow, poplar, birch, hazel, dogwood stems and leaves. Much of her woven and ceramic work is strongly influenced by natural form, containment and movement. More recently she has explored ideas in response to the craft of charcoal burning and her auto¬biographical journey in relation to walking the land and the memory of place. Caroline is currently exploring the use of both clay and wood in creating small scale abstract sculptural vessels. Her main focus is on sustainability and treading the land gently. Solo exhibitions have included at The Crafts Study Centre, UCA, Farnham, Surrey in 2014; Walford Mill, Wimborne, Dorset and Black Swan Arts, Frome, Somerset, both in 2009. As part of selected group exhibitions, Caroline’s work has been shown widely throughout the UK including at Fresh Air 2013 Glos.; Ruthin Craft Centre, Wales 2011; New Brewery Arts, Somerset 2011; Sladers Yard, Dorset 2010; Stroud International Textile Festival, Glos. 2010; Contemporary Applied Arts, London 2007; Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, Scotland 2006; The Biscuit Factory, Newcastle 2005. Public Commissions have included outdoor installations for Arts NK Lincoln; Artsreach Dorset; The Crafts Study Centre Farnham; Bournemouth University; Hilliers Garden Romsey and Dorset County Hospital. Several pieces of work are in public collection at the Wellbeing Centre, Bournemouth University. Caroline is a member of Contemporary Applied Arts London; the Devon Guild Bovey Tracey; Axis; and Dorset Visual Arts.
