Brandon Smith

The Shadow, Consciousness, Quantum universe

profile picture

Brandon Smith is a mixed-media artist who works under the name fatrabbit. His practice sits at the intersection of visual art, language, and sound, drawing on a career spent inside and behind the entertainment industry — producing, shaping narrative, and moving between Sydney, London, Paris, San Francisco and Los Angeles before settling in Dorset. Trained in writing at the Adelaide Institute, Smith spent years working across interactive media, film and radio, his projects accumulating multiple BAFTA nominations along the way — a distinction he describes as evidence of a long and committed career as an awards-season bridesmaid. That experience of inhabiting creative work from the inside, close to its machinery, informs the textures of his visual practice: work that tends to arrive obliquely, via residue rather than declaration. His mixed-media pieces operate in the space between the legible and the felt — threading language, symbol, and image together into forms that ask questions rather than answer them. Recurring preoccupations include consciousness, the quantum nature of matter, and the quietly absurd fact of human existence. The work resists easy categorisation, which Smith considers a feature rather than a problem. He also writes.
