profile picture

Andrew Thomas SWAc, is a professional sculptural artist based in the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, with a lifelong career in the arts, spanning back over the past 37 years. He is a full member of the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts, and has exhibited in the UK’s most prestigious events, alongside many of the Great Masters of art and contemporaries of our time. His visionary artistic expression reflects the depth of his research across multiple subjects of interest, noted for its innovation and outstanding technical distinction, winning numerous top international awards, and can be found in private collections worldwide. Andrew is also a private tutor and published author, who has written prolifically about his subject with his own title and over 80 international publications. Statement: I aspire to bring focus to a diverse range of subjects but am particularly drawn to those that delve deeply into the ultimate questions about life, humanness, and the space where we connect and live. I am especially fascinated by some ancient Eastern philosophies and find the works of Alan Watts and Aldous Huxley, amongst others, a great inspiration for my research. I use wood as a medium, employing the deconstruction process of hand carving to explore the infinite possibilities of form within the block, and immensely appreciate the versatility of its dense organic nature. My works are then cast in bronze, which offers the permanence of a material that can be experienced and treasured for generations.
