Ama Menec

Figurative sculpture

profile picture

My patinated foundry bronze sculptures explore female archetypes and heroines such as Hypnia and Anne Lister, as well as endangered, reintroduced or unjustly persecuted British wildlife such as Buzzards, Red Kites, Badgers and Foxes. Often these are of seldom seen poses or behaviours such as ‘The Challenge’, of a life sized female Kingfisher in a threat display. This dart like pose conveys her intention, and feels lovely in the hand, being pointed at both ends and streamlined in the middle. The life sized badger called Persecuted is a comment on the badger ‘cull’ and subsequent widespread illegal persecution it has unleashed. My latest piece is the maquette of a stretching, yawning vixen, called ‘Wake Up!’, which I made in celebration of wildlife enjoying life and being able to relax. All my sculptures are unified by my contemporary Art Deco styling, and in the case of the Red Fox, this is used to show the crushed tail fur where she has been lying asleep. I also sculpt the same themes in stoneware ceramic both large and small for indoor and outdoor spaces. I share a studio, gallery and sculpture garden with potter Lea Phillips. Our Gallery is called the Happy Crab Gallery, 20A Gloucester street, Weymouth, Dorset, DT4 7AW and we are open Tuesdays to Saturdays. Phone first if making a special journey! I exhibit widely including the RA London, RA Scotland, Ulster RA and Mall Galleries. My sculptures are in collections world wide.
